Meet the PRCA NextGen Scotland Committee: Angela Hughes

1. Tell us a little about your current role and career to date

As deputy managing director, I’m part of the senior leadership team at Clark.  I still take the lead on some client accounts because I believe maintaining a hands-on approach is important to know what account handlers are experiencing day to day.  But a large part of my role involves working closely with our MD to run and manage the business, including future planning around how we sustain growth, and how we ensure Clark is a great place to work.

I’ve had a fairly traditional rise through the ranks of the agency, starting as an account administrator after graduating from university and working consistently to secure promotions.  My 22-year career has included a five-year stint across two in-house PR and corporate communications roles, which has given me a great understanding of the challenges clients face on the other side of the agency fence.

2. Is there any aspect of your job you particularly enjoy?

I love writing and get huge satisfaction from working with clients on complex topics and translating them into media-friendly content.  Even after two decades in the industry, I still get a kick out of securing a great piece of coverage for a client.  It’s also very rewarding to see young people join the industry and watch them learn and develop over time to become highly effective PR professionals.

3. And any aspect you don't enjoy?

Recruitment can be challenging.  There are aspects of the process that, as an employer, you can’t control, including the size and availability of the talent pool at the time you need it.

4. What career advice would you give to your younger self?

Feel the fear and do it anyway; put the self-doubt to one side and draw more confidence from your proven abilities and successes.

5. Why did you decide to join the PRCA Scotland Committee?

I realise it’s an overused statement, but I wanted to give something back.  I’ve learned from many great people in my career and taking on a role that promotes professional development and industry standards feels like a good way to share that knowledge and experience.

6. If you didn’t work in PR, what would be your dream job?

I dabbled a little bit in student and community radio when I was at university.  I sometimes wonder where I’d have landed if I’d pursued a broadcasting career.
